1981년부터 1983년 연말까지 《일간스포츠》에서 연재된 뒤, 1999년 우석출판사에서 4권 완결로 나온 적이 있으며, 2005년에 자음과모음을 통해 6권 분량의 복간본이 출간되었다. 이후 2008년에 한 번 더 출간되었으나 절판되었고, 2023년 7월 문학동네에서 7권 분량으로 무삭제판이 출간되었다. 포사부터 시작하여 진시황제 파트로 마무리 된다. 전체적으로 고우영 십팔사략 2~3권 춘추전국시대 파트와 4권 시황제의 천하통일 파트 중반부와 겹치는 부분이 많으므로 둘 다 읽어보고 비교해보는 것도 재미.

Based on the life of Choi Young-eui (Mas Oyama), a legendary figure in Japanese martial arts history, The Great Ambition was serialized in the magazine New Boy in 1973 and later published as a six-volume book by Eomungak. The series was reissued by Haksan in 2000, and in 2010, CNC Revolution released a fully restored uncut edition (5 volumes), painstakingly reconstructed by Ko Woo Young’s second son, Ko Seong-eon, who recovered over 300 censored scenes.
