을지문덕
1974년 《글동산》의 ‘글과 그림으로 엮는 한국의 역사’ 전집 시리즈에서 <살수싸움의 승리-을지문덕>편을 맡아 탁월한 스토리라인과 파워풀한 연출로 걸출한 시대극화를 완성했다. 612년(영양왕 23) 중국 수(隋)나라의 군대를 고구려가 살수에서 크게 격파한 싸움인 살수대첩의 과정을 자신만의 스타일로 펼쳤다. 하지만 당시 이 책은 작가 이름조차 명시되지 않은 채 수많은 전집 중의 한 권이었는데 ‘고우영’이라는 거장의 이름으로 ‘을지문덕’이라는 원제로 10주기인 2015년 4월25일에 출간하여 『을지문덕』 복간 이상의 큰 의미를 갖는다.
이야기 소재가 무엇이 됐든 ‘고우영표 만화’로 재창조하는 고우영은 당시 출판사의 편집방향과는 상당한 거리를 둔 ‘을지문덕’을 그렸다. ‘을지문덕’이 거의 나오지 않는 작품으로 살수대첩이 성공하기까지 장렬하고 비장한 삶을 산, 민중들의 뜨거움에 포착했다. 타고난 이야기꾼의 상상력은 살아 꿈틀거리는 이 땅의 민초들을 주인공으로 탄생시켰고, 영원히 잊지 못할 가슴 뛰는 명장면들을 선사하며 독자들을 사로잡았다. 청석바위를 들고 선 우직한 고구려 사내 달무, 그런 달무를 연모하지만 오랑캐 볼모가 되는 봉녀, 꼬마 돌마로, 스승 노스님, 고구려를 위해 이름 없이 스러져가는 민중들의 이야기는 거칠고도 부드러운, 과감하면서도 정교한 고우영만의 매력을 뿜어낸다.

In 1974, Ko Woo Young contributed Eulji Mundeok to the anthology series Korean History Told Through Words and Pictures published by Geuldongsan. With a powerful narrative and dynamic visual direction, he vividly reimagined the Battle of Salsu (612 CE), where Goguryeo forces defeated the invading Sui Dynasty army.
At the time, the work was published without clearly crediting the author and existed merely as one volume among many. Its republication in 2015 under Ko Woo Young’s name, on the 10th anniversary of his passing, restored the work’s rightful place as a major achievement. Rather than focusing solely on the titular general, the story centers on unnamed commoners whose fierce and tragic lives culminated in victory—revealing Ko Woo Young’s distinctive talent for transforming historical epics into deeply human dramas.
