임꺽정
1972년부터 일간스포츠에 연재한 만화로 조선 시대, 명종대의 유명한 도적인 임꺽정의 일생을 다루었다. 당시 가장 세력있는 권신이었던 이량과 윤원형이 권세를 다투는 어지러운 시대에 백정 출신의 장사인 임꺽정이 탐관오리에게 시달리는 백성들을 구제하고자 떨치고 일어난다는 내용을 담고 있다. 임꺽정 뿐만이 아니라, 제2의 주인공이라고 할 수 있는 윤원빈과 서림도 주인공인 임꺽정에 못지 않은 비중이 주어진다는 점이 독특하다. 또한 임꺽정의 심복 가운데 전국에서 모여든 부하들이 각자 자기 고장의 사투리로 이야기하는 것도 재미있지만 연재하던 군사정권 시절에는 검열을 받아 모조리 표준어로 바뀌고, 많은 부분이 훼손되어 복원에 상당한 차질이 걸렸다고 개정판 머릿말에서 회고한 적도 있다.
