짱구박사
1957년 《만화학생》에 연재된 『짱구박사』는 둘째 형 고일영이 연재하던 우스개 만화로 1958년 두 형이 사망하자 당시 고등학생이던 셋째 고우영이 ‘추동식’이라는 필명을 이어받아 연재한 작품. 짱구박사는 머리카락 세 개가 난 역삼각형 큰 얼굴에 원 모양의 둥글고 큰 안경을 끼고 넓은 체크 무늬의 양복을 입고 다닌다. 짱구박사는 실패하는 연구도 많았지만 물로 가는 자동차, 빵이 쏟아져 나오는 빵기계 등 만화적인 발상의 기발한 발명품들로 어린이 독자에게 인기가 많았다.
Jjanggubaksa : Professor Jjanggu
First serialized in Manhwa Student magazine in 1957, Jjanggubaksa was originally a gag comic created by Ko Il-young, the artist’s second eldest brother. After the deaths of his two older brothers in 1958, Ko Woo Young—then a high school student—continued the series under the pen name Chudongsik.
The character Jjanggubaksa is recognizable by his large inverted-triangle face with three strands of hair, round oversized glasses, and wide checkered suit. Although many of his experiments ended in failure, his imaginative inventions—such as a car that runs on water or a bread machine that endlessly produces loaves—captured the hearts of young readers with their whimsical comic ingenuity.
