Ko Woo Young Comics
: Never Ending Story Exhibition
This exhibition offered a unique opportunity to explore a distinct landscape of visual culture through the works and world of Ko Woo Young, whose comics traversed classical Eastern literature and contemporary popular culture, rich historical knowledge and thought, thrilling fiction, and vividly alive characters—earning him generations of devoted fans.
The exhibition brought together the memories of the generation that first encountered “Korean comics for adults” through Ko Woo Young’s works, and the imaginative responses of the next generation—his sons’ and daughters’ generation—who engage powerfully with the imaginative potential of comics today. As a retrospective exhibition held in a fine art museum and led for the first time by the contemporary art world, the exhibition sought new directions and possibilities for modern visual art and cultural reception.
Planned by the ARKO Art Center in 2008, Ko Woo Young Comics: Never Ending Story examined the current cultural landscape saturated with visual images, while reflecting on the direction of contemporary visual culture. The exhibition was composed of several sections:
– a section highlighting popular culture of the 1970s and 1980s, when Ko Woo Young’s comics garnered widespread attention;
– a space displaying original artworks, rare books, and personal objects preserved by the artist;
– and a section presenting contemporary artists’ reinterpretations of Ko Woo Young’s work, alongside critical examinations of the current state and future direction of Korean comics.
Ko Woo Young was widely recognized as one of the three major popular culture icons of the 1980s, alongside novelist Choi In-ho and singer Lee Jang-hee. Beginning with the launch of sports newspapers, his serialized newspaper comics opened a new era of adult-oriented comics. His dynamic storytelling, especially his reinterpretations of Chinese classics interwoven with endlessly generated and disappearing hero narratives, was a major factor behind his immense popularity.
Visitors encountered Ko Woo Young’s work through seven key concepts—Introduction, Omnidirectional Flow, Allegory, Complex, Subversion & Provocation, Wit & Humor, and Vortex—where original works by Ko Woo Young and responses by contemporary artists unfolded sequentially. Through this interplay of “stories, and stories that follow,” audiences were continually invited to intervene through the pleasure and vitality unique to comics.
